New Young Women's Mentorship Program PDF Print E-mail
Deputy Director, Marcanne Kouri-Beck, will be overseeing a mentorship program that was established in the spring of 2004, that combines sports participation with an educational intervention that focuses on reducing and preventing health-risk behaviors in young women.

Subjects discussed will include: Body Image, Stress, Alcohol and Partying, Smoking, Performance Drugs, and Anger Management. The recreational part of the program provides girls with experiences of teamwork, goal-setting, positive adult mentoring, leadership training, as well as a ready-made social support system. It is through this environment that they will explore the important health-risk issues that girls face today.
Through a grant from the Albuquerque Community Foundation, the program was able to get started in Bernalillo County at the NMPAL Recreational Center in 2004.

Funds from a National PALYEP award will be used by Metro PAL to implement the mentorship program into the Albuquerque, Rio Rancho Explorers Program.

Other funding will be looked at to continue the Bernalillo County program through the Karate, Judo and Boxing programs.
